HyperDAAC Browser Demo

Note that the HyperLens Browser runs entirely within its own window. Please give it time to load!

This is a live JAVA browser for global data from the USGS/EDC DAAC (landdaac). When the Applet starts, it will load a global image into a HyperLens viewer. The image is made with AVHRR NDVI from the 1KM dataset, and is shown in the Interrupted Goode Homolosine Projection downsampled to 64Km pixel size.

From this, you can explore the data using the main functions of the HyperDAAC:

• Load data layers, using the Layers menu and AVHRR Browser plugin.
• View the data layers, using the Lenses
• Extract scenes at higher resolution, using the Query lens.

However, it is severely limited compared to the CDROM:

• Applet security prevents local operations, such as printing or accessing your disc. On the WWW in general, this is necessary to prevent a malicious applet taking control of your computer.
• We cannot offer the full AVHRR archive on this server: we do not have the resources to hold a terabyte of data online, and applet security prevents direct retrieval from the DAAC. We offer browse data only. Only the base and the six land classification layers are available at high resolution. Note that this limitation would be lifted if the applet were run from the EDC server.
• The applet limits the size of scene you can extract to 200000 pixels.
• The applet offers only 64Km resolution for whole-world browsing.

In addition, you are at the mercy of the slow and buggy JAVA implementations offered by most Web browsers.

Browser Note

HyperLens requires a JAVA 1.1 browser, such as recent versions of Netscape Communicator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Sun HotJava, or IceSoft ICEBrowser. Other browsers, including older versions of the above, may not work.

In our experience, HotJAVA suffers significantly fewer bugs with this and other demanding Applets than the JAVA implementations offered by Netscape and Microsoft browsers. The browser included with the HyperDAAC CDROM uses the HotJAVA engine, which WebÞing has licensed from Sun Microsystems.
